Simple Tax Question
As you may or may not know, I recently got a new promotion with my company, and am now working in downtown Detroit. The only negative about it is that I now have to pay city tax to Gangsta Maya Kwame.
My question doesn't really have anything to do with Kwame. It would still apply if Hendrix won, Coleman was still around, or some other individual was mayor. And that question is this:
If I have to pay city taxes, and these funds go towards city services, shouldn't I have some say in how my tax dollars are spent?
Think about it. I give 3% of my paycheck every two weeks to the city, but I can not vote for mayor, city clerk, or city council in Detroit since I am not a resident of the city. I spend at least 40 hours a week in the city, and to me, I should be able to vote, or, have some form of diluted vote in city elections. Something like all people who work in the city are eligible to vote and have their votes count something like 2/5 of a vote of a citizen. It's a thought. I'm not sure of the ACTUAL percentage; I'm not a political scientist. I'm talking more in the abstract.
By definition, isn't this taxation without representation? I'm taxed, but have no say in how it's spent. I agree that it's not to the level of the American Revolution, but it's still not right.
