Oprah on XM

Oprah Winfrey has her own channel on XM satellite radio, like a lot of celebrities. Yesterday was her station's debut, and here is an interesting account of her first hour:

'Oprah talked about her humble beginnings in Mississippi, and particularly about how her mother's highest aspiration for her was that she might end up cleaning white people's houses, because "they give away nice clothes." And then Oprah pointed out that now that she's Oprah, she has "all these white people" working for her, and that in fact there's only one black person on the staff.'

Questions:

  1. How is this not a racist statement?
  2. Where's the outrage from ANYWHERE on this obviously blatant comment?
  3. Where's the affirmative action crowd on her hiring practices? Only 1 black (you could argue that one person is a token). No Asians, Hispanics or the like?

What a shame it is that so many people fall for her totally false, friendly persona. It sounds like all she wants to do is 'Stick it to da man!' Good for her. She certainly is doing her part to fight racism. Nothing gets society to move beyond racism than more racism.

Different Strokes?

I was listening to XM today, when I heard the theme to 'Different Strokes', (It takes different strokes to move the world...) and it got me thinking. Before I say of what, if you don't recall the show, or particularly what was on screen as the theme played, this'll not make a lot of sense.

As the theme plays, Arnold and Willis (black youths) are playing basketball in Harlem, and then run off to the car of Mr. Drummond (white adult) and leave. The basic premise of the show is that they are adopted by this man. Here is what I thought:

Why is a rich, white man driving around in a limo in the ghetto, and then just picking up two seemingly random young black males? Why are they so eager to run to his car (since they don't know who he is yet)? And no one at all finds this.......odd?
