Playing Politics?
Earlier this week, a member of the House of Representatives, John Murtha, (D-PA) demanded an immediate pullout of all troops from Iraq. Why it was newsworthy, as Democrats have been beating this drum for 3 years, was that Murtha is considered a hawk on military issues. (Never minding the fact that the media couldn't get this story straight either, as he'd been demanding immediate pullout since last year. Big shock - the media mis-reporting a story).
The Democrats have been playing politics with this issue like the always do - never offering solutions, just complaining about problems. Think race, poverty, just to name a couple. After all, they ran Congress for over 40 years up until 1994, and the same issues never got better.
Well, the House Republicans, the only members of either house of Congress with any guts, decided to call their bluff. They had a vote last night on a non-binding resolution calling for immediate troop withdrawal.
The Democrats accused Republicans of playing politics on the issue. Here are a couple of quotes of top ranking Democrats in the House:
"A disgrace" House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
"The rankest of politics and the absence of any sense of shame," Number 2 Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MA)
The resolution was voted down by a 403-3 count. Voting against the resolution was Murtha. That should show who was truly playing politics as the Democrats had their chance to show that the "really mean" what they're saying about the war, but chose not to. This is playing politics? Giving the Democrats their opportunity to be put on record as demanding immediate troop withdrawal? Sounds to me if anyone is playing politics, it's the Democrats, doing the same thing they always do - complain about something, and when given the opportunity to do something, they pass. Thereby keeping the "issue" alive.
